Anne Detrick
With over thirty years of teaching experience at the university level, Anne has taught thousands of students that the age-old adage “Writers are born, not made” is simply untrue. She believes language is a superpower that every student has, and she’s passionate about helping her students realize that writing is about who they are and how they communicate themselves to the world. Her career in education spans nearly her entire adult life – starting as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Maryland, then as an instructor at Howard University, and now currently as an adjunct professor at the University of the District of Columbia. Anne prides herself in the number of students who “stay” with her during their college careers, taking as many of her classes as she offers during their four years. She’s proud to have mentored hundreds of students as they navigate college, look into grad school, and consider career choices. In addition to teaching and mentoring, Anne spent three years at the Institute for Policy Studies, where she developed curricula and coached activists in op-ed writing and grassroots organizing.
