Anne Detrick

With over 25 years of teaching experience at the university level, Anne has taught thousands of students that the age-old adage “Writers are born, not made” is simply untrue. She believes language is a superpower that every student has, and she’s passionate about helping her students realize that writing is about who they are and how they communicate themselves to the world. Her career in education spans nearly her entire adult life – starting as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Maryland, then as an instructor at Howard University, and now currently as an adjunct professor at the University of the District of Columbia. The number of students who “stay” with her during their college careers, taking as many of her classes as she offers during their four years, is a point of real joy. She’s proud to have mentored hundreds of students as they navigate college, get into grad school, and consider career choices. In addition to teaching and mentoring, Anne spent three years at the Institute for Policy Studies, where she wrote on international arms control and human rights, directed IPS’s social activism school, and coached activists in op-ed writing and grassroots organizing.
